The Farmers’ Union of Wales was established in 1955 to protect and advance the interests of Welsh farming families. Since 1978 the Union’s role has been formally recognised by the UK Government and subsequently by the Welsh Government. 

The FUW’s Vision is thriving, sustainable, family farms in Wales and the Mission of the Union is ‘To Advance and Protect Wales’ Family Farms’, both nationally and individually, in order to fulfil the Union’s vision. 

The Union’s Policy Department is seeking maternity cover for the position of Senedd and Parliamentary Affairs Officer. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a politically minded individual to represent the interests of Welsh family farms ahead of the 2026 Senedd elections. It is a role which will allow the office holder to meet and discuss policy with elected representatives, political candidates and policy teams within Welsh political parties in the run-up to what will be a historic election for the Senedd with the number of members expanding from 60 to 96. 

The successful applicant will have a detailed understanding of the policy and political context in which we operate and a good understanding of the workings of government and Senedd procedures. 

They will be responsible for producing briefings for political stakeholders based on the information provided by the policy team, and provide FUW staff and officials with written and verbal political updates including guidance relating to upcoming policy changes and inquiries of relevance to Welsh agriculture. 

They will work alongside the Senior Management Team, policy and communications teams on developing and implementing timely and effective campaigns which will influence elected stakeholders in Wales and Westminster. 

Applicants should have excellent written and verbal skills including the ability to write reports, and to write copy for a range of audiences in a variety of formats. The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable. 

Where suitable, the successful applicant may work remotely and/or from one of the FUW’s offices across Wales, but will, where practical and necessary, attend meetings in person with other FUW staff or outside bodies and individuals. 

The possession of a car and a driving licence or the ability to travel around Wales without reliance on public transport is essential for this post. 

Salary: £25,000 - £29,000 

Contract period: Fixed term contract to the 31st of March 2026
