80% of Wales is desegnated as Less Favoured, of which, 28% is categorised as Disadvantaged Area, while 72% is Severely Disadvantaged Area.

Less Favoured Areas (LFAs) and previous area classifications have therefore played a key role in sustaining Welsh upland communities and environments for many decades.

The Hill Farming and Marginal Land Committee deals with all issues that are particularly pertinent to Wales's  hill farming communites, including Tir Mynydd, fallen stock, and sheep identification.

The Chariman of the Committee is Derek Morgan, a sheep and cattle farmer from Radnorshire. Mr Morgan is also the Chairman of the Welsh Assembly Government's Upland Forum, and a member of the Food Standards Agency's Welsh Food Advisory Committee.
